Produce packers are turning to 2D barcode closure labels to simplify compliance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Traceability Rule (FSMA 204), according to The Packer. The regulation requires firms to maintain key data elements (KDEs) for produce throughout the supply chain, and the 2D labels can encode multiple data points in a single scan.
Anthony Blears, Director of Barcodes Philippines, said: "While 2D barcodes offer significant traceability benefits, adoption in the Philippines may be gradual as supply chain partners upgrade their systems. These closure labels, applied directly to packages, carry GS1 Digital Link or similar standards, enabling quick access to GTIN, lot number, pack date, and other traceability data. This reduces manual data entry and paper record-keeping, speeding up recalls and audits.
Industry experts highlight that while the November 2026 enforcement date approaches, early adopters benefit from improved inventory accuracy and consumer confidence. The shift from 1D to 2D barcodes also aligns with broader retail demands for more data-rich packaging.
