Aboitiz Power Corp. has broken ground on a 239-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power project with a 65-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, which it targets to energize by 2028, according to BusinessWorld. In a statement on Monday, the company said its renewable energy unit, Aboitiz Renewables, Inc., started construction of the Luna Solar project.
AboitizPower is expanding its renewable energy portfolio as part of its commitment to a balanced energy mix. The Luna Solar project is expected to help meet the growing demand for clean energy in the Visayas region. The inclusion of a battery energy storage system will allow the facility to store solar power during peak generation and dispatch it when needed, enhancing grid stability.
The project comes as the Philippines accelerates its shift toward renewable energy under the government's policy to increase the share of clean energy in the power mix. Solar projects with integrated battery storage are becoming increasingly common as a way to address the intermittent nature of solar power. Industry players note that such hybrid systems provide reliability while supporting the country's target of achieving 35% renewable energy in the power mix by 2030, and 50% by 2040.
