Cybersecurity firms S-RM and FGS Global have released a report detailing a sharp rise in ransomware attacks across Asia-Pacific, with incidents increasing 59% year-on-year in 2025. According to the report cited by TechPinas , East and Southeast Asia recorded a 71% surge — the fastest growth globally — as cybercriminals exploit rapid digitalization and AI adoption.
The report highlights that AI is a double-edged sword: while businesses leverage it for efficiency, attackers use AI to accelerate attacks, personalize extortion, and exploit vulnerabilities in AI-powered systems. Over 770 organizations in the region were named on ransomware leak sites last year.
Experts warn that modern ransomware incidents now involve more than technical disruption. Attackers are weaponizing stricter data privacy regulations and media exposure to intensify pressure on victims during negotiations and crisis response.
