The Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) said on Wednesday that it is asking state universities and colleges to promote agricultural chemistry as a means of indirectly attracting young people to farming-related careers, according to a report by BusinessWorld.
In a briefing, BSWM Director Gina P. Nilo said its experience with mobile soil laboratories in 2024 indicated demand for certified agricultural chemists and related professionals. The agency believes that highlighting the role of chemistry in modern agriculture can make the sector more appealing to younger generations who seek science-based careers.
The initiative aims to address the aging farming population in the Philippines by creating a pipeline of technically skilled workers. BSWM is coordinating with academic institutions to develop curricula and hands-on training programs that combine soil science, water management, and chemical analysis.
