The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) are collaborating to develop a geographical indication (GI) roadmap for local farm products, Philstar Biz reported.
A geographical indication is a label used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin. The roadmap aims to identify and protect Philippine agricultural products that can benefit from GI certification, such as heirloom rice, Davao coffee, or Guimaras mangoes, enhancing their market value and preventing misuse of the names.
The initiative is expected to support farmers by providing legal protection and premium pricing for region-specific products. The DA and IPOPHL plan to consult stakeholders and finalize the roadmap within the year, aligning with the government's push to boost rural incomes and promote Philippine food heritage.
