The Department of Agriculture (DA) is strengthening its marine mammal safety rules as the country seeks to resume its export of blue swimming crab to the United States, according to Philstar Biz.
The move comes after the US raised concerns about incidental capture of marine mammals in Philippine crab fishing operations. The DA is updating its protocols to align with US import requirements, which mandate measures to reduce bycatch and protect species such as dolphins and sea turtles.
Philippine blue swimming crab exports were temporarily suspended pending compliance with the new standards. The DA expects the enhanced rules to restore market access and support the livelihood of local fishers.
