The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) launched the country’s first national Nature-based Solutions (NbS) policy on June 30, requiring the integration of nature-based approaches into climate, biodiversity, and disaster risk reduction programs. The policy was reported by BusinessWorld.
The DENR developed the NbS policy with support from the Forest Foundation Philippines, the Government of Canada, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and other partners. The policy aims to leverage natural ecosystems to address environmental challenges while providing social and economic benefits.
The move marks a significant step in aligning national strategies with global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Implementation will involve coordination across government agencies, local governments, and civil society to ensure nature-based solutions are embedded in development planning.
