Meta has appointed Indian fintech founder Kunal Shah to lead WhatsApp, signaling a major push into digital payments and commerce, according to a report by Inside Retail Asia. The move underscores Meta’s ambition to transform WhatsApp from a messaging app into a full-fledged financial services platform, particularly in emerging markets.

Shah, best known as the founder of Indian fintech unicorn Cred, brings deep expertise in digital lending, credit, and payments. His appointment is expected to accelerate WhatsApp’s integration of commerce features, including in-app payments, merchant services, and small-business tools, leveraging India’s UPI infrastructure as a blueprint.

Industry analysts view the leadership change as a strategic bet on mobile-first financial inclusion. WhatsApp already has over 500 million users in India alone, making it a powerful distribution channel for digital payments. The appointment could also signal broader plans to replicate WhatsApp Pay’s India model in other markets across Asia and Africa.
