The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), operator of LRT-2, reported that revenue in the first six months of the year fell 24.84% to P481.90 million, according to BusinessWorld. The decline reflects the impact of fare discounts imposed during the energy emergency.
Despite the revenue drop, ridership increased 15.29% to 31.75 million passengers in the first half, compared to the same period last year. The higher number of riders indicates sustained demand for LRT-2 services even with discounted fares.
The Department of Transportation (DoTr) had directed the fare discounts as part of measures to ease the burden on commuters during the energy crisis. The LRTA's financial results underscore the trade-off between affordability for passengers and revenue generation for the state-run rail line.
