Manila Water Co. Inc. is looking to enhance its backwash recovery system to improve water supply in the coming months as it prepares for the upcoming El Niño, according to a report by Philstar Biz.
The backwash recovery system captures and recycles water used to clean filters, reducing wastage and increasing the utility's overall water yield. By boosting this system, Manila Water aims to stretch available supply and mitigate the impact of reduced rainfall that typically accompanies El Niño, which often leads to lower reservoir levels and tighter water availability in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
The move is part of Manila Water's broader preparedness measures for the dry spell, ensuring that customers in its east zone concession area maintain adequate supply. The utility has also previously highlighted the importance of conservation and infrastructure upgrades as climate-related weather patterns become more pronounced.
