Egypt is exploring the possibility of a Philippine production base for weaving Egyptian cotton, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced Monday. According to BusinessWorld, Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque revealed the interest during an event, stating, “They’re interested in producing Egyptian cotton fabrics here.”
The potential collaboration would leverage the Philippines' textile manufacturing capabilities and strategic location in Southeast Asia. Egyptian cotton is globally renowned for its high quality and long fibers, making it a premium raw material for luxury apparel and home textiles. DTI officials indicated that discussions are at an early stage, with further technical and feasibility studies needed.
If realized, the initiative could boost Philippine exports and deepen bilateral trade ties with Egypt. The DTI is expected to coordinate with local textile producers and investment promotion agencies to assess infrastructure and labor requirements. No timeline has been set for the next steps.
