The Philippines remains on par with neighboring Southeast Asian countries in its pursuit of quantum technology, with current efforts focused on fundamental research and manpower development, according to the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) on Monday. Niñaliza Escorial, director of the DoST’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), said the country is still in the early stages but is keeping pace with Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. The statement was reported by BusinessWorld.
Escorial emphasized that the Philippines is investing in capacity-building initiatives, including training programs and scholarships, to develop a skilled workforce in quantum science. The DoST is also collaborating with academic institutions to strengthen research infrastructure. These efforts aim to ensure that the country can eventually contribute to practical quantum applications in computing, communication, and sensing.
While the Philippines has yet to achieve major breakthroughs, Escorial noted that the country’s progress is comparable to regional peers. She added that sustained funding and international partnerships will be crucial to advancing quantum technology in the Philippines. The DoST remains committed to fostering innovation in this emerging field.
