The Daily Tribune reported that the retail power market in the Philippines has opened to smaller consumers, granting them the ability to choose their electricity suppliers. This move expands the number of eligible participants beyond large industrial users, potentially increasing competition in the sector.

Under the expanded guidelines, smaller commercial and industrial customers can now participate in the retail competition and open access (RCOA) program. Previously limited to high-volume users, the change aims to lower energy costs by fostering competition among power generators and suppliers.

Industry observers expect the policy shift to benefit small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by giving them more options and potentially lower rates. The development aligns with the government’s goal of promoting energy market liberalization and consumer choice.
