South Korean retail technology firm Chosunbiz reported that Shinsegae I&C, the IT arm of the Shinsegae Group, has launched an artificial intelligence-based checkout system designed to cut customer wait times in stores.

The system uses computer vision to automatically scan and recognize items placed at the checkout counter, eliminating the need for manual barcode scanning. Early tests show transaction times reduced by up to 50%, with the technology being piloted at select E-mart and Shinsegae Department Store locations.

Industry observers note that the deployment comes as South Korean retailers increasingly adopt automation to address labor shortages and rising customer expectations for frictionless shopping. Shinsegae I&C plans to expand the AI checkout to additional outlets later this year.
