The Philippines can draw lessons from how Singapore manages stormwater, according to BusinessWorld. Ryan Yuen, managing director of PUB Consultants Pte. Ltd. (PUBC), a unit of Singapore's national water agency PUB, said the city-state's approach has mitigated flooding by improving its drainage network.
Yuen explained that Singapore maintains a separate stormwater system distinct from its used water collection system. This separation prevents overwhelming wastewater treatment plants during heavy rains and allows for more efficient management of storm runoff, reducing flood risks.
The model could inform Philippine infrastructure planning, which faces frequent flooding due to inadequate drainage and combined systems. PUB's expertise through PUBC may offer technical support for similar upgrades in Metro Manila and other high-risk areas.
