The Sugar Regulatory Administration has warned that the worsening infestation of red-striped soft scale insect in Negros Occidental could result in the loss of about 150,000 metric tons of raw sugar — equivalent to approximately eight percent of the country’s annual production — if immediate intervention is not undertaken, according to Philstar Biz.
Negros Occidental, known as the sugar capital of the Philippines, accounts for the majority of the nation's sugar output. The red-striped soft scale insect has been spreading rapidly, threatening yields across the province.
The Sugar Regulatory Administration is urging farmers to implement control measures to prevent further losses. Without swift action, the pest could significantly impact domestic sugar supply and prices.
