Globe Telecom, Inc., PLDT Inc., and Converge ICT Solutions, Inc. have proposed a $500-million (about P30.63-billion) nationwide undersea fiber-optic network to expand connectivity across the Philippines, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said. The proposed network aims to strengthen the country's digital infrastructure by providing redundant and high-capacity fiber links, particularly for island provinces that currently rely on limited submarine cable connections. If realized, the project would complement existing terrestrial and subsea networks operated by the three telcos, potentially improving internet resiliency and speed for consumers and businesses.
The DICT has yet to issue a formal response on the proposal, but the initiative aligns with the government's push to expand broadband access nationwide. A coordinated investment among the country's major players could also accelerate the rollout of 5G and other digital services, as the Philippines continues to catch up with regional peers in connectivity.
