TechPinas reported that Visa, in partnership with RCBC and the Department of Transportation, has expanded its open-loop contactless fare collection system to all 13 stations of LRT-2. Commuters can now pay using Visa cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled devices for faster, safer, and more convenient train travel.
The rollout marks Visa's fourth cashless transit project in the Philippines, following deployments on MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod. According to the report, the initiative supports financial inclusion by giving more Filipinos and international visitors access to digital payments while advancing smart mobility across Metro Manila.
Open-loop fare systems allow commuters to use existing bank cards or mobile wallets instead of proprietary transit cards, simplifying daily travel. The use of QR and NFC technologies reflects the broader shift toward standardized contactless payments in public transportation, helping streamline commutes and strengthen the Philippines' digital payment ecosystem.
