A pilot program between retail giant Walmart and apparel manufacturer Hanes has achieved 100% inventory tracking accuracy using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, as reported by Packaging World. The initiative aimed to improve supply chain visibility from production to point-of-sale by tagging individual items and cases with RFID labels.

The pilot demonstrated real-time tracking of Hanes products throughout Walmart's distribution network, reducing out-of-stocks and enabling more efficient replenishment. Both companies reported significant improvements in inventory accuracy and labor productivity, as RFID eliminated manual scanning and reduced data entry errors.

Industry analysts see the results as a potential catalyst for broader RFID adoption in retail supply chains, particularly for high-volume consumer goods. Walmart has long been a proponent of RFID, and the success with Hanes could encourage other suppliers to invest in similar tracking systems to meet retailer demands for end-to-end visibility.
