According to a report from Sixteen:Nine, a supermarket chain has decided against adopting e-paper shelf labels for the time being, citing cost concerns and the need to evaluate long-term ROI. The retailer tested e-paper in select stores but concluded that the technology is not yet mature enough for a full rollout.
The chain's management pointed to high initial investment and the rapid pace of technological change as primary reasons for the delay. They also noted that current supplier capabilities for e-paper labels are fragmented, making it difficult to ensure consistent performance across all store departments.
The decision does not rule out future adoption. The supermarket plans to revisit e-paper technology within two years as standards evolve and hardware costs decrease. Meanwhile, it will continue using traditional paper labels, supplemented by digital price displays for promotional items.
