According to a report by cybersecurity firm S-RM and communications firm FGS Global, as covered by TechPinas, ransomware attacks in Asia-Pacific surged 59% in 2025, with East and Southeast Asia recording a 71% increase — the highest growth rate globally. The findings are based on over 800 incidents handled by S-RM worldwide last year.

The report highlights that while businesses are rapidly adopting AI to improve efficiency, cybercriminals are also leveraging AI to accelerate attacks, create personalized extortion tactics, and exploit vulnerabilities introduced by AI-powered systems. This dual use of AI is reshaping the threat landscape across the region.

Experts warn that ransomware incidents are no longer purely technical disruptions. Attackers are now weaponizing stricter data privacy regulations and even media exposure to intensify pressure on organizations during negotiations and crisis response, compounding the risks for businesses across Asia-Pacific.
