A significant expansion of branchless banking services in the Philippines was reported by The Manila Times, highlighting the growing adoption of digital financial channels to serve unbanked and underbanked populations. The initiative aims to bring banking services closer to rural areas where traditional brick-and-mortar branches are scarce.
The expanded network integrates mobile wallets, agent banking points, and digital onboarding to reduce transaction costs and travel time for customers. Partner financial technology firms have enabled real-time transfers, bill payments, and micro-loans through over-the-counter agents and smartphone applications.
This development aligns with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' financial inclusion strategy, which targets having 70% of Filipino adults formally banked by 2023. The expansion is expected to boost economic activity in remote provinces by providing safer and more accessible savings and payment mechanisms.
