Coupang has been fined $409 million by South Korean regulators in what is being reported as the country’s largest data breach penalty. The fine, amounting to 1.4 percent of the e-commerce giant’s 2025 revenue of 45 trillion won, was confirmed in a report from Inside Retail Asia.

The penalty underscores increasing regulatory scrutiny on data privacy compliance in South Korea. Coupang, which operates one of the country’s largest online marketplaces and logistics networks, is expected to appeal the decision.

The breach reportedly involved the exposure of customer data, though specific details of the incident have not been fully disclosed. Retailers worldwide are facing stricter data protection rules, and this fine is likely to serve as a warning for other major platforms.
