The Department of Agriculture (DA) has recommended a 60-day extension of the PHP 50 per kilogram price cap on imported rice, according to a report by PNA. The measure, initially imposed in September 2023, aims to make rice more affordable for Filipino consumers amid persistent high prices.
DA Undersecretary Roger Navarro said the extension is necessary to ensure that the benefits of lower import tariffs are passed on to consumers. The agency also cited the need to monitor market behavior and prevent profiteering as global rice prices remain volatile.
The recommendation now awaits approval from the inter-agency committee. If granted, the price cap will continue to apply to imported rice sold in public markets and supermarkets nationwide, providing temporary relief to Filipino households.
