The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) is calling for stricter implementation of the country’s building code following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted Mindanao. In an interview with BusinessWorld, DoST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized that current safety measures may be insufficient for strong tremors.

Solidum noted that while the widely taught “drop, cover, and hold” drill is a basic safety measure, it may not be enough to protect people during a major earthquake. He stressed the need for more robust construction standards and stricter enforcement of the National Building Code to ensure structures can withstand intense shaking.

The DoST’s call comes amid growing awareness of the country’s vulnerability to seismic events. Officials urge local governments and the construction industry to prioritize building resilience to reduce risks and potential casualties in future earthquakes.
