The government is planning to offer more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity in the seventh green energy auction (GEA-7) round for solar and hydropower projects situated in Mindanao, according to a draft terms of reference from the Department of Energy (DoE). The DoE will offer 505 MW of solar capacity for annual delivery, with additional hydropower capacity to be determined.
The green energy auction program is part of the Philippines' push to increase renewable energy capacity and meet its 2030 renewable portfolio standards. The GEA-7 aims to attract investments specifically for Mindanao, which has abundant solar and hydro resources but faces power supply challenges.
If successful, the auction could significantly boost Mindanao's renewable energy share and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The DoE is expected to finalize the terms and schedule after public consultation.
