In a report by ecommercenews.com.au, GS1 Australia is urging retailers to transition from traditional linear barcodes to 2D barcodes.
2D barcodes, such as QR codes, can store significantly more data than 1D barcodes, including batch numbers, expiry dates, and web links. This enables retailers to improve inventory management, product traceability, and customer engagement. The shift also supports the GS1 Digital Link standard, which allows a single barcode to link to multiple online resources.
The transition is part of a global movement toward 2D barcodes, with GS1 standards being updated to accommodate the change. Retailers who have not yet upgraded risk falling behind in efficiency and consumer expectations. GS1 Australia emphasizes that early adoption provides a competitive advantage.
