At the annual GS1 Connect conference, Packaging World reported that major companies including Procter & Gamble, Ken's Foods, and Walmart gathered to discuss the ongoing transition to 2D barcodes and the importance of data cleanliness in supply chains.
The conference emphasized the shift from traditional 1D barcodes to 2D barcodes, such as QR codes and GS1 DataMatrix, which can carry more information and enable better traceability. Sessions highlighted data cleanliness as a critical factor for successful implementation, as inaccurate or incomplete product data undermines the benefits of enhanced barcode technology.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations also featured prominently, with discussions on how improved data sharing and 2D barcodes can support recycling and waste reduction efforts. Presenters from Walmart and other retailers stressed that industry-wide collaboration is essential to achieve the full potential of these technologies in retail and logistics.
