GS1 Portugal, in a report published by Grande Consumo, has outlined the impending phase-out of conventional linear barcodes in favor of 2D codes such as QR codes. The organization, which oversees global supply chain standards through GS1, says the transition will enable more data-rich product identifiers, improving traceability, consumer engagement, and inventory management.

According to the discussion, the migration will follow the GS1 Digital Link standard, allowing barcodes to carry URLs and other dynamic information. This move mirrors a broader global trend within the retail industry to adopt 2D codes that can be scanned by smartphones and provide real-time product details, including origin, certifications, and recycling instructions. GS1 Portugal emphasized that the transition will be gradual, with traditional barcodes coexisting alongside 2D codes for several years.

The shift is expected to benefit both retailers and consumers by reducing scanning errors and enabling more efficient recalls. GS1 Portugal urged businesses to start preparing for the change, citing successful trials in other markets. The organization plans to release detailed implementation timelines and guidelines in the coming months.
