GS1 UK has unveiled a new self-serve QR code creation tool designed specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and challenger brands. The tool, reported by Retail Technology Innovation Hub, enables businesses to generate GS1 Digital Link-compliant 2D barcodes without requiring deep technical knowledge or high costs.

Anthony Blears, Director of Barcodes Philippines, noted that while tools like GS1 UK's self-serve QR code creation are promising, adoption of 2D barcodes in the Philippines will require significant upgrades to POS systems, scanning equipment, and data workflows across the supply chain. He added that Barcodes Philippines provides free IBN Link access for customers seeking to generate GS1 Digital Link landing pages from their existing GTINs.

The solution allows users to create unique QR codes that can encode product information such as batch numbers, expiration dates, and serial numbers, helping smaller retailers enhance traceability and consumer engagement. It is part of GS1's broader push to accelerate adoption of 2D barcodes for retail, logistics, and supply chain applications.

Industry observers note that the move lowers the barrier to entry for small businesses looking to adopt advanced barcode standards. By offering a self-serve model, GS1 UK aims to level the playing field, enabling SMEs and challenger brands to compete more effectively with larger enterprises in the digital marketplace.
