THE House prosecution panel is ready for the July 6 opening of Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio’s impeachment trial, according to its lead prosecutor. “We are very much ready,” lead prosecutor and Batangas Rep. Gerville R. Luistro told reporters in mixed English and Filipino on Thursday, as reported by BusinessWorld.
Luistro said the panel has been preparing since the articles of impeachment were transmitted to the Senate. The House of Representatives voted to impeach Duterte-Carpio in February 2025, with the Senate set to act as the trial court. Prosecutors have been reviewing evidence and coordinating witnesses to ensure a smooth presentation of their case.
The trial is expected to draw significant public attention, with the vice-president facing allegations including betrayal of public trust, corruption, and misconduct. The Senate, which will be composed of 24 senators, will determine the outcome. A conviction requires a two-thirds vote, which would remove Duterte-Carpio from office and potentially bar her from holding future public posts.
