These labels integrate barcodes directly into the closure system, enabling packers to encode critical tracking information at the point of packaging.
Anthony Blears, Director of Barcodes Philippines, noted that while 2D barcodes enhance traceability for export-ready produce, Philippine packers and exporters should consider that widespread adoption requires upgrading POS, ERP, and production-line systems. He added that Barcodes Philippines offers free IBN Link access for customers to generate GS1 Digital Link landing pages from their GTINs, simplifying compliance with international traceability standards.
The 2D barcodes, often Data Matrix or QR codes, can store key data elements (KDEs) such as lot numbers, harvest dates, and farm origin. When scanned at each supply chain node—from packing house to retailer—the labels provide real-time visibility and reduce manual data entry errors. This approach aligns with GS1 standards, facilitating interoperability across the industry.
The move to 2D closure labels helps produce packers meet FSMA 204 compliance deadlines while improving supply chain efficiency.
