The Philippine Chamber of Food Manufacturers Inc. (PCFMI) together with other industry groups is pushing for their inclusion in the further review of the Philippine Nutrient Profile Model (PNPM) to ensure it aligns with current dietary habits and realities, Philstar Biz reported.
The PNPM, developed by the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) and other agencies, is used to classify foods based on their nutritional content for regulatory and labeling purposes. Industry stakeholders argue that the current model may not adequately reflect evolving food consumption patterns and technological advancements in food reformulation.
The groups are calling for a transparent and inclusive process that considers scientific data and industry expertise. They believe that a collaborative review will result in a more effective tool for promoting public health without imposing undue burdens on food manufacturers.
