South Korean budget coffee chains are expanding into Japan and the United States after establishing a strong foothold in Southeast Asia, according to a report from Chosunbiz. Brands such as Mega Coffee and Paik’s Coffee have gained popularity in Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines with their low-priced offerings.
The move comes as domestic competition intensifies and growth slows in Korea. The chains aim to replicate their Southeast Asian success by targeting price-sensitive consumers in Japan, where coffee consumption is high but premium brands dominate, and in the US, where the specialty coffee market is mature but affordable options remain in demand.
Industry observers note that the Korean franchises face challenges such as differing consumer tastes and stricter regulatory standards. Nevertheless, their proven supply chain efficiencies and aggressive pricing strategies could give them an edge in capturing market share abroad.
