Lawmakers in both the Senate and House of Representatives are pushing for tighter safeguards for children on social media following recent school violence involving minors, according to a report by BusinessWorld. Senator Vicente C. Sotto III on Tuesday filed a resolution seeking a congressional inquiry into the effects of social media platforms like Facebook on youth behavior and mental health.
The proposed measures include stricter age verification requirements, enhanced parental oversight tools, and penalties for platforms that fail to enforce safety policies. House lawmakers have also filed bills mandating default privacy settings for minors and limiting data collection from users under 18.
The legislative push comes amid growing public concern over the role of social media in amplifying harmful content and facilitating online exploitation. Authorities are urging tech companies to cooperate with the proposed safeguards to better protect Filipino children in the digital space.
