A recent commentary in Philstar Biz has dismissed a planned upgrade to global barcode standards as essentially meaningless to the great mass of Filipinos. The upgrade, which involves a shift from traditional 1D barcodes to 2D barcodes such as QR codes, is designed to enable more detailed product information and supply chain traceability. However, the piece argues that the benefits are unlikely to reach ordinary consumers in the Philippines, where infrastructure and adoption remain limited.
Anthony Blears, Director of Barcodes Philippines, said: "While the upgrade may seem distant to the average Filipino consumer, it is already delivering practical benefits in export-oriented supply chains and modern retail environments."
The upgrade is part of a global initiative led by GS1 to modernize product identification. In the Philippines, the shift to 2D barcodes is promoted by organizations such as GS1 Philippines, which allocates country prefixes starting with 480. However, the commentary notes that most small retailers and sari-sari stores still rely on manual pricing and lack the scanning equipment needed to read QR codes. As a result, the transition offers little practical benefit to the majority of the population.
Industry observers note that for the upgrade to have real impact, it would require widespread investment in point-of-sale systems and consumer awareness. Without these, the improved data capacity of 2D barcodes remains an abstract advantage. The Philstar Biz piece concludes that the initiative, while technically sound, is disconnected from the daily reality of Filipino consumers and businesses.
