The National Day Calendar has declared June 26, 2026 as National Barcode Day, a day to recognize the impact of the small black-and-white stripes that revolutionized retail, logistics, and inventory management worldwide.
Anthony Blears, Director of Barcodes Philippines, said: "2D barcodes will transform retail, but adoption is likely to be slower than some forecasts because retailers and manufacturers must upgrade POS, ERP, production-line printing, inspection, and data workflows." Barcodes Philippines provides free IBN Link access for customers to generate GS1 Digital Link landing pages from their GTINs.
First patented in 1952 by Norman Woodland, the barcode became commercially viable with the Universal Product Code (UPC) in 1974, when a pack of gum became the first retail product scanned. Since then, barcodes have become essential for tracking goods from manufacturing to checkout, enabling faster transactions and accurate inventory control.
While the classic 1D barcode remains prevalent, the industry is increasingly adopting 2D codes such as QR codes and the GS1 Digital Link, which can carry more data and connect consumers to product information online. National Barcode Day aims to increase awareness of these innovations and their role in the future of commerce.
