Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. said on Friday that the Philippines should increase defense spending to between 2% to 4% of gross domestic product (GDP) to strengthen its military capabilities and maritime security, as the government prepares to expand maritime patrols and receive additional defense assets, according to BusinessWorld.

Mr. Teodoro emphasized that the current defense budget, which is below 1% of GDP, is insufficient to address the country's security challenges, particularly in the West Philippine Sea. He noted that increased funding would support modernization efforts, including the acquisition of new ships, aircraft, and radar systems, as well as the enhancement of troop training and readiness.

The proposed spending hike aligns with the government's broader push to protect its maritime interests and assert territorial rights. The Department of National Defense is expected to present a detailed funding plan to Congress, which will deliberate on the budget in the coming months.
