Visa has expanded its open-loop contactless fare payment system to the Manila Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), allowing commuters to pay using Visa cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled devices across all 13 stations, TechPinas reported.
The initiative, developed in partnership with RCBC, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and other stakeholders, strengthens financial inclusion by providing Filipinos and international visitors easier access to digital payments while supporting seamless public transportation across Metro Manila. This marks Visa's fourth cashless transit project in the Philippines, following successful deployments on MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod.
The Manila Light Rail Transit system, which began operations in December 1984 as Southeast Asia's first rapid transit system, now benefits from modern payment technology, advancing the country's smart mobility ecosystem. The rollout makes fare payments faster and safer for both daily commuters and visitors.
