The new system mandates that all entities in the farm-to-table chain—from growers and packers to retailers—track specific traceability lot codes (TLCs). This allows investigators to quickly pinpoint the source of an outbreak, reducing the time needed for recalls and public warnings. In a post-FSMA 204 world, a produce outbreak response involves electronic data sharing across multiple platforms, cutting investigation times from weeks to days or even hours.

While the rule promises improved food safety, industry experts note challenges, including the cost of compliance and the need for standardized technology adoption.
