A new approach from Earth911 suggests that barcodes could unlock more efficient reporting for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) packaging regulations. EPR laws require companies to report on the amount and type of packaging they place on the market, often leading to complex data collection.

Barcodes Philippines said that the application of barcodes for EPR reporting aligns with the growing need for supply-chain transparency, and Philippine companies can leverage standard GTINs to streamline compliance while also improving retail readiness.

By encoding packaging material data into barcodes, such as GS1 standards, producers could automatically generate the required reports. This would reduce manual data entry and improve accuracy, potentially easing compliance for businesses of all sizes.

While the barcode system offers a promising solution, widespread adoption would require industry collaboration and updates to existing scanning infrastructure. If implemented, it could significantly lower the administrative burden of EPR programs globally.
