Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is set to be released from the remainder of his prison sentence under a royal pardon, the country’s justice minister told reporters on Wednesday, as reported by BusinessWorld .

Mr. Thaksin, who was released on parole last month after serving eight months in prison, had just over three months remaining on his sentence. The royal pardon effectively ends his prison time and allows him to remain free without further restrictions.

Thaksin, a billionaire and former prime minister ousted in a 2006 military coup, has been at the center of Thai politics for decades. He returned to Thailand in 2023 after years in self-imposed exile and was initially sentenced to eight years in prison on corruption charges, later reduced to one year by royal pardon.
