Globe Telecom, Inc. has become the first telecommunications operator in the Philippines to commercially offer direct-to-cell satellite connectivity after receiving regulatory approval from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to deploy Starlink’s Direct to Cell technology, according to BusinessWorld.

The NTC approved the commercial rollout of Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite service nationwide, Globe said in a statement on Monday. The technology enables satellite-to-mobile connectivity, allowing users to send text messages, make calls, and use data in areas without terrestrial mobile coverage.

The service is expected to benefit remote and underserved areas in the archipelago, bridging connectivity gaps. Globe’s partnership with Starlink positions it as a pioneer in satellite-based mobile services in the country.
