A Japan-based telecommunications company is seeking to enter the Philippine market, joining two US satellite service providers whose applications are already in advanced stages, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) as reported by BusinessWorld .

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy disclosed the development but did not name the Japanese firm or the US applicants. He noted that the entry of new players would boost competition and improve internet services in the country, which has long been dominated by PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom.

The Philippines has been working to attract foreign telecom investment to address connectivity gaps, especially in rural areas. The entry of a Japanese operator and satellite providers could accelerate the rollout of broadband infrastructure and offer consumers more choices.
