Senate President Sherwin T. Gatchalian on Sunday said there is a need to draft a law countering nihilistic violent extremism (NVE), citing a rise in reported minor-inflicted violence following the deadly Tacloban school shooting, BusinessWorld reported.

In a press statement, Mr. Gatchalian expressed openness to working with the Department of Justice in crafting the policy on NVE. He emphasized that the recent school shooting highlights the urgency of addressing extremist ideologies that can influence minors.

The proposed law aims to provide a legal framework to prevent and counter violent extremism, focusing on early intervention and deradicalization efforts. Gatchalian noted that existing laws may be insufficient to address the evolving nature of NVE threats.
