A lawmaker on Tuesday questioned the government’s reported 6.4% inflation rate for June, saying the figure fails to capture the continuing rise in prices of food, fuel and other basic commodities. Party-list Rep. Antonio L. Tinio of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers made the remarks in a statement reported by BusinessWorld.

Tinio said teachers, workers and other consumers continue to bear the burden of high living costs despite the government’s reported slowdown in inflation from the previous month. He argued that the official data does not match the experience of ordinary Filipinos who still see prices rising at the market and the pump.

The lawmaker’s criticism adds to broader skepticism about the accuracy of official inflation figures, which the Philippine Statistics Authority compiles based on a basket of goods and services. Tinio urged the government to address the root causes of price hikes, including supply chain bottlenecks and high fuel taxes.
