MediCard Philippines has launched an emergency care plan specifically designed for gig workers and those in the informal economy, addressing a critical gap in healthcare access for millions of Filipinos who lack employer-sponsored health coverage, Philstar Biz reported.

The affordable plan offers coverage for emergency consultations, laboratory tests, and hospitalization, with premiums tailored to the irregular income patterns common among freelancers, ride-hailing drivers, and other independent workers. MediCard said the initiative aims to provide a safety net for a sector that often relies on out-of-pocket payments or goes without care.

Industry observers note that the move aligns with broader efforts by Philippine health insurers to serve underserved populations, as the gig economy continues to expand. MediCard’s product is among the first to bundle emergency services specifically for informal workers, potentially setting a precedent for more inclusive healthcare products in the country.
