MERALCO POWERGEN CORP. (MGEN) has appointed Felino M. Bernardo as head of strategic energy transition initiatives, BusinessWorld reported. The move comes as the company advances major generation projects and pursues plans to double its power capacity by the end of the decade.

Bernardo will oversee MGEN's energy transition roadmap, which includes integrating renewable energy sources and optimizing existing thermal assets. The company aims to expand its portfolio from the current 2,500 megawatts to approximately 5,000 MW by 2030, aligning with the Philippines' push for cleaner energy.

The appointment underscores MGEN's commitment to balancing reliability and sustainability as the Philippines transitions to a lower-carbon energy mix. The company said Bernardo brings extensive experience in project development and power generation, which will be critical in executing its growth strategy.
