The Philippines’ three largest telecommunications firms — PLDT, Globe Telecom, and Converge ICT Solutions — are jointly proposing a PHP 30 billion subsea cable network equipped with earthquake sensors, as reported by YugaTech.

The proposed infrastructure would combine high-capacity international connectivity with seismic monitoring capabilities, potentially improving both internet resilience and earthquake detection in a country prone to tectonic activity. Subsea cables are vital to the Philippines’ digital economy, and embedding sensors could provide valuable data for early warning systems while reducing the need for separate undersea observation equipment.

If approved, the joint project would mark a rare collaboration among competing telcos on critical national infrastructure, potentially lowering costs and boosting redundancy. The companies have not yet disclosed timelines or regulatory filings, and the proposal remains subject to feasibility studies and government approval.
