According to a report by Google News, the retail industry is preparing for a widespread transition from traditional 1D barcodes to 2D QR codes, a shift that promises to modernize how consumers interact with products and make purchases. The change, driven by the need for more data capacity and contactless scanning, is expected to be adopted globally over the next few years.
QR codes can store vastly more information than linear barcodes, including product origin, expiration dates, and promotional links, enabling shoppers to access detailed product information simply by scanning with a smartphone. This enhanced data capacity also supports supply chain tracking and anti-counterfeiting measures, offering retailers improved inventory management and consumer trust.
Industry experts note that the adoption of QR codes is already underway in many markets, with pilot programs in grocery and general retail. Standards bodies such as GS1 are promoting the use of the GS1 Digital Link, which embeds product identifiers into QR codes, to ensure global interoperability. The transition is expected to accelerate as more retailers and consumers become familiar with the technology.
